Britney Jean debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard charts this week with 107,000 copies, making it the lowest-charting and lowest-selling studio album of Brit’s career. Adding insult to injury is that Britney Jean is the only new debut in the top five: Garth Brooks and One Direction’s new albums –which are at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively– are both in their second week, while Kelly Clarkson’s Christmas album, Wrapped In Red, which follows at No. 3, has been out since October.
A few years ago it would’ve seemed unbelievable that Kelly Clarkson could outsell a pop phenomenon like Britney Spears, but it’s happened. Wrapped In Red has already shifted an impressive 442,000 copies, and it still has two weeks of very strong sales left before Christmas hits. Britney Jean, on the other hand, doesn’t look poised for any chart longevity at all: latest single, “Perfume,” already tanked on the Hot 100 and is currently sitting at No. 92 on iTunes, It missed the top ten in Australia and Japan, and the top thirty in the UK.
