The Obama campaign released a new ad featuring Iowan Zach Wahls and how the president’s recent announcement to support the freedom to marry affected his family. Last year, during an attempt by the Iowa legislature to reverse marriage equality, Wahls delivered an impassioned speech about his two moms and how they had helped to shape him into the man he is today. “If I was your son, Mr. Chairman, I believe I’d make you very proud,” 19-year-old Wahls told the state’s top lawmaker that day. Video of his testimony went viral and the repeal attempt subsequently failed.
In the campaign ad, posted on the LGBT for Obama site on July 24, Wahls recalls the moment he told his mother Terry about Obama’s historic statement. “Are you kidding,” she said, before then becoming emotional. ”The president announcing his support, it was a beautiful day,” said Wahls. “Clearly, [the president's statement] came from a place of conviction. It’s something that I really respect about this president, he has said that he will stand with you no matter who you are and no matter where you come from.”
