New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees broke the N.F.L.’s single-season passing yardage record on Monday night, surpassing Dan Marino’s mark from 1984.
He broke the record in style with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles with 2 minutes 51 seconds left in the Saints’ home game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Going into the game, Brees needed 305 yards to break Marino’s mark of 5,084 yards, a record only a handful of players had even challenged in the 27 seasons since he set it. Brees had 230 yards by halftime, including touchdown passes to Marques Colston and Jimmy Graham that helped the Saints to a 21-10 lead. He tossed another touchdown pass in the third quarter, to Robert Meachem, as the Saints pulled away from the Falcons.
Brees set the record with a game to spare; the Saints will end the regular season next Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
