AUSTIN, MN - The Minnesota government shutdown has left thousands without work, parks and rest stops closed and now it's affecting the type of beer available in the state.
Chicago based MillerCoors' Minnesota license has expired. With no state government in place to renew it they can't sell their product in the Gopher State, and local bar owners say that's going to take a hit on their business.
Chicago based MillerCoors' Minnesota license has expired. With no state government in place to renew it they can't sell their product in the Gopher State, and local bar owners say that's going to take a hit on their business.
“Miller and Coors is pretty popular,” said Randy Qualey, co-owner of Windrift Bar and Lounge.
Qualey says he orders products from MillerCoors every week, but that might change.
“They're saying that Miller and Coors have to quit selling beer in Minnesota so that's going to affect us,” said Qualey.
In Minnesota a brand labeling license is required to manufacture, distribute or sell alcohol. MillerCoors' license is no longer valid which means all 39 of the company's brands can't be legally sold.
“They'll probably switch to a different one which is going to affect MillerCoors,” said Qualey.
The State of Minnesota says they're trying to handle the situation in the best way possible.
