Petition Launched to Rename New Orleans Lee Circle Monument After Allen Toussaint

A social media push has gotten the attention of thousands of people.

A Facebook page dedicated to a simple proposition, rename Lee circle as Allen Toussaint circle, is being followed by those interested in the idea. The page is called Allen Toussaint Circle. It was a thought put out there by musician Glen David Andrews and a few other people who share the passion for the idea. There is an online petition that people are signing.

Calls for the Robert E. Lee monument to come down have stirred controversy and spurred racially motivated debates.

It eventually inspired New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu to call for the removal of a number of city monuments, including Lee Circle.

Now, those who are mourning the death of legendary musician Allen Toussaint say this latest proposition could be a good thing.

"Toussaint worked with all musicians and helped them. Not just blacks and whites, but everybody," the director of music and history at Loyola University, Sandy Hinderlie said.

Hinderlie expressed approval for this idea. He says it’s good for history and for the city.
