Universal Pictures announced on Wednesday that Pitch Perfect 3 is officially moving forward. Kay Cannon, who wrote the first two movies, is in negotiations to pen the new script, according to The Hollywood Reporter. There's no word on whether Elizabeth Banks, who co-starred in both films and stepped into the director's chair for Pitch Perfect 2, would consider helming the next installment.
It's also unclear what plot Pitch Perfect 3 would pursue, as most of the Barden Bellas have now graduated college. Sources reportedly tell THR that Hailee Steinfeld's addition to the cast was the mark of the films' franchise plans. It's hard to picture a Pitch Perfect without Rebel Wilson's Fat Amy or Anna Kendrick, the latter of whom seemed to lay low during the promotion of the second film, which earned middling reviews. Still, with a reported $29 million price tag, the movie's $162 million (and counting) domestic gross provided a fantastic return for Universal.
