Prince Harry has qualified as an Apache Aircraft Commander – making him one of the country’s elite helicopter pilots. His new title means he can now take overall control of the two-man helicopter during missions.
Captain Harry Wales, as he is known, was awarded his new role this week after completing a tour of Afghanistan as an Apache Co-Pilot Gunner earlier this year.
His commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Tom de la Rue said: “This is a tremendous achievement for Captain Wales, who passed with flying colours.
“I am delighted that his new status as a qualified Apache Aircraft Commander places him at the very top of his profession.”
The 28-year-old claimed one of two “best young airman” awards when he became co-pilot of the gunship last year.
And in June, Prince Harry wowed crowds flying as part of the Apache helicopter display team at the popular RAF Cosford Air Show in Shropshire.
