More people in East Baton Rouge Parish support the legalization of same-sex marriage than are against it, according to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation's annual CityStats survey, released Monday.
In BRAF's five years of conducting the wide-ranging survey, this is the first time supporters of same-sex marriage outnumbered opponents. The survey, conducted in February and March, included responses from 513 people and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percent.
This local, statistical shift perhaps echoes a larger national trend of growing support for legalization of gay marriage. Among those in favor is President Barack Obama, who publicly endorsed same-sex marriage in May of 2012.
Fifty-three percent of Americans say the law should recognize same-sex marriage, according to three consecutive readings of Gallup polling over the last year.
Circling back to the original CityStats results, are Baton Rouge residents joining the wave of Americans who have altered their views on gay marriage? If so, what local factors do you think are leading to this statistical shift?
