Jonathan Groff Lands Lead In New HBO Gay Comedy

Jonathan Groff appeared in the second season of Kelsey Grammer’s Boss, but found himself without a job suddenly when STARZ canceled the critically-acclaimed but ratings-challenged drama. Hopefully, he’ll have better luck with HBO than he did with his previous network.

The 27-year-old scored one of the leads in a pilot for HBO centered around 30-something gays living in San Francisco. Sounds like a gay version of Girls, swapping out Brooklyn for Silicon Valley. Groff will play Patrick who’s a video game developer. Love a hot nerd ;) While successful in his career, he’s completely the opposite in his personal life. His character, along with the others will grapple with all the options in contemporary life and the complexities of the modern gay experience in the Bay Area.

The series is being produced by Sarah Condon (Bored to Death) and David Marshall Grant (Brothers and Sisters). Screenwriter Michael Lannan (Interior. Leather Bar. and Damages) is penning the script. Also part of the cast is Frankie Alvarez. He’ll play Patrick’s bestie named Augustin. From HBO’s press release, he’s a politico with a really big ego and has a problem settling down.
