Donna Summer Hits Number 1 on the Dance Chart With ‘Hot Stuff 2018’

Donna Summer has scored a posthumous No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart with the new remix of her 1979 US pop smash ‘Hot Stuff.’ The new version, ‘Hot Stuff 2018,’ has been mixed by Ralphi Rosario and Erick Ibiza, and climbs 2-1 on the chart dated 30 June.

The new achievement marks Summer’s 16th dance chart-topper, a sequence that now spans 43 years, since her breakthrough hit ‘Love To Love You Baby’ in 1975. This was shortly before the magazine’s introduction of the dance survey, before which chart statistician Joel Whitburn has now adopted the data compiled by rival publication Record World.

Summer’s last song to top the list was another posthumous remix, by Laidback Luke in 2013, of her 1978 hit version of Jimmy Webb’s ‘MacArthur Park.’ She died in 2012, at the age of 63. The arrival of ‘Hot Stuff 2018’ at the summit means that Summer draws level with Jennifer Lopez in eighth place among artists with the most dance chart No. 1s. But as Billboard reports, both are a very long way behind the unrivalled leader in those statistics, Madonna, who has 46; Rihanna is in second place with 32.

‘Hot Stuff 2018’ is on the recently-released compilation Summer: The Original Hits, at a time when new appreciation of the artist’s creative legacy is running high, as Summer: The Donna Summer Musical continues its run on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
