Chelsea Handler will create the first talk show for Netflix in 2016.
Handler's talk show will debut in all Netflix territories and will consist of the comedian's noteworthy opinions on all topics of entertainment and culture, as well as her well-known guest interviews. The host of Chelsea Lately, Handler will end her run with the E! talk show in August.
“If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested," Handler said in a statement. "I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch, so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move."
Along with the talk show, Netflix also will premiere a stand-up special by Handler in October that's based off her sold-out tour, Uganda Be Kidding Me Live. Handler is also signed on to create four new docu-comedy specials for Netflix that will cover NASCAR, politics, Silicon Valley, and the NBA Draft.
“The Internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television, and together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late-night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late-night part,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix.
