Sam Smith Opens Up About His Sexuality To Fader Magazine

The 22-year-old British singer opened up like never before about his love life, which in turn, lead Smith to open up about his sexuality. He explained that his debut album, “In the Lonely Hour,” is about “a guy I feel in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back.” The end of the “Leave Your Lover” video seemed to suggest some form of unrequited love, but it was never really clear as to whom Smith had the relationship with.

In the interview he said he found closure by admitting to the guy he loved that he ha inspired the new album. Smith considered it a liberating feeling saying, “It feels good to have interviews like this, to chat about it and put stuff to bed. It’s all there now, and I can move on and hopefully find a guy who can love me the way I love him.”

Sam Smith never really hid his sexuality; he just didn’t feel the need to vocally open up about it. He wanted the focus to remain on music and it turns out that the music was doing the talking for the R&B sensation. Speculation about Smith’s sexuality first begin to surface back in January. In an interview on the Grammys’ red carpet, the “Lay Me Down” singer described the influences behind his new album.

He said, “I’ve never been in a relationship before and I really wanted to make an album that was about love. But in different forms of love – so unrequited love and loneliness. I’ve been brutally honest in the album.” Smith has also listed his idols as Elton John and George Michaels. Both are UK singers who have come out as gay and opened the door for Smith to be whom he is and express his emotions as a gay man.
