Spears, whose latest album Britney Jean is out Tuesday (3 December), talked to the LGBTI publication PrideSource about how gays inspire her music.
'I get inspiration from them on almost all of my songs,' Spears says. 'They're somewhat girls, so it's so inspiring to do stuff that they like to hear, like the cool "in" stuff. Whatever I do for each record is definitely inspired by them.'
Her labeling her gay fans as 'somewhat girls' is already being met with the same backlash as when Spears seemed to be labeling all gays in an earlier interview as 'adorable and hilarious.'
Pride Source asked the singer about that backlash and she seemed oblivious.
'Wait, what? Who felt the other way?' she asked.
After being filled in she said: 'I would never say anything to be mean to them. I love my gay fans. Gay people are always usually my best friends in the whole world. I completely adore them.'
Spears is asked about gay marriage and other topics during the eight-minute interview (she is in favor but has nothing to say about it) and about being a gay icon (she is not aware of this).
But she's aware she has gay fans - some of whom she's met after her shows.
'A couple of them have told me about their heartbreaks and shared stories about their boyfriends, which has been really kind of sweet.'
