New Orleans Snowball Wars Come to an End


Snowballs are as integral to New Orleans life as beignets. But hard-core loyalties have cleaved the community of shaved-ice enthusiasts and vendors, as seen by the three decades of lawsuits that have just come to an end. Channel 4 in New Orleans has the Story The lawsuits involved disputes over trademarks and patents for the equipment used to make the snowballs, and also which companies could use which names for flavors like “King Cake,” “Cajun Red Hot,” “Orchid Cream Vanilla” and “Hurricane.”
