Trash-talking Kathy Griffin heads back to Times Square on Tuesday for her fifth turn co-hosting CNN’s coverage of the big bash with Cooper, an hours-long live television marathon in which the unpredictable comedian has cursed and stripped down to her underwear in the past.
“Each year I keep thinking she’s not going to get rehired, and then there she is back again,” Cooper told the Daily News. “I actually love doing it with her. She’s a handful because we never know what she’s going to say or do. It makes me nervous every time — I sweat tremendously during the broadcast.”
The unlikely pairing of Griffin and Cooper began in 2007, when the straitlaced newsman was paired with the flame-haired star of “My Life on the D-List.”
The pair became fast friends, as Griffin quizzed Cooper with various personal questions and rumors and tried to steer the program off track from Cooper’s normal mild-mannered reporting style.
The comic also initiated an annual drinking game for each time she addressed Cooper as “Andy.”
In 2008, Griffin’s trading barbs with hecklers caused trouble when, as the broadcast was going into a commercial, she used an obscenity.
She also asked if she could “get a pap smear from Dr. Sanjay Gupta” and called Glenn Beck a “heroin-addict Mormon.”
The following year, Griffin got into even more trouble after dropping the f-bomb on live TV and asking Cooper, “How do you not just stare in the mirror all day and pleasure yourself because you’re so gorgeous?”
Last year, she took her clothes off.
“We had a sign under the camera that said no nudity or swearing,” Cooper said. “ I turn around for a second and she had stripped down to her bra and started throwing things at the Jonas brothers.”
“I get mortified,” Cooper continued. “Then I giggle like a 12- year-old schoolgirl — but I want to apologize in advance to anyone she might kiss, or assault — particularly [ABC’s] Ryan Seacrest, whom she is obsessed with.”
