New Orleans Mayor's Son Arrested on DWI Charge

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A teenage son of New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu was arrested early Tuesday on charges that include driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.
Benjamin Landrieu, 19, was booked into the city's jail and released later in the morning. He was driving near the Tulane University campus in the city's Uptown neighborhood when he struck three parked cars, police said.
"I love my son very much unconditionally, but bad decisions have bad consequences," Landrieu said. "And there's no doubt that there will be legal consequences to bad decisions that Ben made last night and other family consequences, as well."
Officer Frank Robertson, a spokesman for the police department, said Benjamin Landrieu didn't have any visible injuries but was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
The mayor said he has instructed "everybody that works for the city ... to follow proper protocol and to follow proper procedures" in handling his son's case.
"I have every reason to believe that that's what happened last night and that will continue to happen as this matter winds its way through the legal process," he said during a press briefing where he also discussed an initiative designed to crack down on nuisance bars.
Landrieu said he doesn't know if his son was drinking at a bar before his arrest. The mayor said he went to the scene, but he said he was careful to "stand away."
"From everything I was able to witness, I thought the police did a very good job to follow the protocol," he said.
