Drew Brees recently and finally signed a deal worth $100 million over 5 years to return to the New Orleans Saints. This will allow the superstar quarterback to attend training camp and help pave a new road for the franchise down in the Big Easy.
Already a savior for the franchise, bringing a Super Bowl and leading the charge that came after the devastating Hurricane Katrina, Brees is now set to begin a new era for the Saints. An era that could be even better than the one that came before.
The Saints, on all accounts, have certainly had a rough offseason. With the bounty allegations came the suspension of their general manager and revered coach Sean Payton, as well as a few key defensive studs on the roster (most notable Jonathan Vilma). All of these sanctions have seemingly left a black-eye on a revered franchise.
At the same time, many fans were wondering whether Drew Brees would sign a contract, with the franchise being unwilling to give him exactly what he thought he was worth. Thankfully, in the end, the Saints brass saw sense and gave Brees one of the richest contracts in NFL history.
Keep in mind, this contact is also front-loaded for the beginning years, which will really help the Saints out with cap space in a few years when they'll need it.
But this truly is another new beginning for the Saints team. With their beloved quarterback locked up and happy for the next five years, as well as an emerging superstar in Jimmy Graham, and a three-headed monster of running backs with Darren Sproles, Mark Ingram, and Pierre Thomas). And even with the suspensions, the Saints boast a talented roster on the defensive end. Saints fan should rest easy in the Big Easy. Don't count your team out just yet.
Drew Brees is truly one of the great players and great guys in the entire NFL. Even without a coach, Brees will make sure this team is ready to go come the regular season. He's the type of guy that will work even harder to prove the doubters wrong and show the world just what this Saints team is capable of.
We all saw what happened during their first game back in the Superdome against Michael Vick's Atlanta Falcons. What a game that was! Truly one of the most inspiring football games of my generation.
There's no way we can fully predict what exactly will happen with the Saints in this upcoming season. But we can definitely expect them to bring it all. With Brees leading the charge, fans should only expect greatness.
The penalties are harsh and the world will be watching but there is definitely no reason we should count out a team led by Mr. Brees. With his legacy in question and the team he loves behind him, many eyes will be on him. And for that reason alone, he will sign brighter than ever and carry his team on his back.
