'American Idol' Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta has just made a life-changing announcement. The singing sensation will leave his music career behind and embark on a two-year, full-time Mormon mission.
"I've chosen to serve a full-time mission," the teary-eyed singer announced at his show at Salt Lake City, Utah's Abravanel Hall. "It's not because someone told me I was supposed to do it and not because I no longer want to do music anymore. It's because it's what I feel I need to do next in my life," he insisted.
The singer continued, "It's the same feeling that I've always tried to follow in my life -- the feeling that's allowed me to have the opportunities I've had, the challenges and the blessings, too. And I've learned to trust that feeling and answer when it calls." That's pretty profound for a 20-year-old.
David did not announce when he will commence his mission, but as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he will be expected to follow a strict set of rules. The devote Morman will have to adhere to a formal dress code and a daily schedule that starts at 6:30AM. Mission members are generally allowed only two phone calls per year, both to their mother on Christmas Day and Mother's Day.
The timing is not completely out of left field. Archuleta was recently dropped by his record label, Jive, following the lackluster performance of his latest album, 2010's 'The Other Side of Down.'
