Comin' round the River Bend

photo

St. Charles Streetcar #900 rounding the turn from St. Charles onto South Carrollton Avenue at the River Bend.

The St. Charles Avenue Streetcar, is the oldest continuously operating street railway system in the world. The Saint Charles Avenue Line starts uptown, at South Carrollton Avenue and South Claiborne Avenue. It runs on South Carrollton Avenue towards the Mississippi River, then near the river levee turns on to Saint Charles Avenue. It proceeds past entrances to Audubon Park, Tulane University and Loyola University, continues through Uptown New Orleans including the Garden District, and ends at Canal Street in the New Orleans Central Business District at the edge of the French Quarter, a distance of about seven and a half miles.

The streetcar in this photo is part of the 900 Series built for the City of New Orleans by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works company of North Carolina. You may not recognize the name but if you have kids you will know the Thomas-Built Bus logo that is on the products they make today. Thomas is now a subsidiary of the German company, Daimler (also the makers of Mercedes-Benz automobiles).

There were a total of 73 cars built in this series from 1923-1924 of which 35 are still in service. The Saint Charles Streetcar line is currently operated by the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority.
