The Prytania Theatre's ongoing Classic Movie Series gets a New Orleans flair this weekend, with the return of director Elia Kazan's 1950 New Orleans-shot, New Orleans-set thriller "Panic in the Streets."
It screens at noon on Saturday (Aug. 6) and Sunday (Aug. 7) at the theater, 5339 Prytania St. Tickets are $5.50.
The film stars Richard Widmark as a public-health official determined to stop the spread of a killer virus threatening to overtake the city. Zero Mostel and a young Jack Palace -- in his big-screen debut -- co-star as a couple of local ne'er-do-wells who just want to steer clear of the authorities, and who have no idea what they're really up against.
In addition to being a darn good bit of suspense -- in a write-up last September (the last time the Prytania screened "Panic"), I called it "an A-plus noir thriller with a B-movie title" -- it features a wealth of New Orleans scenery. In fact, the local flavor starts with the opening credits, in which Kazan's camera trucks down a 1950s-era Bourbon Street, and continues right up to the third-act climax, which plays out beneath a riverfront wharf.
I Love This Film!!!!
