One Step Closer to Equality.
During an hourlong debate about gay marriage in the Nevada State Senate, Democratic Sen. Kelvin Atkinson made an abrupt announcement: "I'm black. I'm gay. I know this is the first time many of you have heard me say that I am a black, gay male." The state Senate was meeting over a measure that would repeal its ban on same-sex marriage. It eventually passed, and if it gets approved by the state Assembly and both houses, it will go to a public vote in 2016. Atkinson furthered his point: "If this hurts your marriage, then your marriage was in trouble in the first place."
