Will Joan Rivers Bring Handcuffs to Proposed Costco site in New Orleans?

When Joan Rivers hits town for her benefit comedy gigs at the New Orleans Healing Center on Aug. 14, will she detour to protest at the site of the planned Costco big-box warehouse store in the Carrollton area? City leaders have been anxious to land the store, but Rivers isn't a fan of the retail giant.

On Tuesday, the 79-year-old comedian handcuffed herself to a shopping cart at a Costco in Burbank, Calif., protesting the chain’s refusal to carry her new book, “I Hate Everyone… Starting With Me.” Accompanied by an entourage, and shouting into a bullhorn, she compared Costco to “Nazi Germany.”

According to Rivers, the chain won’t stock her book because of jokes on the back cover that the store considered inappropriate.

The cover includes imaginary quotes from such deceased notables as poet Sylvia Plath and assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian. Police escorted Rivers from the store. No arrests were made.
